The Debate On Regulation of Electronic Cigarettes Continues

A legal challenge has been announced recently against Tobacco Products Directive of EU by the electronic cigarette brand, Totally Wicked. Along with it a plan to regulate electronic cigarettes as a medicine in the UK has been announced by MHRA, a Directive of UK, which is expected to start functioning from 2016. At present only general product safety regulations have regulated electronic cigarettes.

A report authored by Peter Hajek has been published by the Journal of Addiction, after 100 experts and scientists had filed petitions with the WHO to grant greater regulation to the electronic cigarette industry, argued that any such regulation can cause large scale damage to health. A fierce debate has been induced about the future of e cigs after the release of this news.

Small Fire In Suitcase Calls For Travel Ban On E Cigarettes

A small fire in a passengers suitcase boarding an aeroplane in Boston has sparked a new argument for whether e cigarettes should be banned completely on aeroplanes. The fire was spotted by a Boston baggage handler after he could smell smoke coming from one of the bags. On closer inspection he discovered one of the bags was smouldering and this was later put down to an e cigarette. All the passengers from a JetBlue airways flight which was ready for a takeoff at the Logan International Airport, Boston Massachusetts this month were requested to leave the aircraft when the baggage handling authorities suspected a bag of emitting smoke.

Last week, Nevada Attorney General, Catherine Cortez Masto joined 28 other attorneys in an official letter supporting the FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration) proposal to expand the umbrella over various tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes. Unfortunately, the FDA has not properly assessed the costs of suppressing the e cigarette industry, and may be unintentionally jeopardizing public health. 

The Food and Drug Administration in America has been following the assumption that electronic cigarettes pose a serious health risk. It does not consider the facts on how electronic cigarettes can improve the overall public health.
